Liana · Marylebone

Behind the glass

In high summer there are around twelve thousand roses in Queen Mary's Gardens, and Liana has an opinion about a surprising number of them. She lives a short walk away in Marylebone and passes through most mornings. Chestnut brown and perfectly straight, her hair falls well below her shoulders; she is slim, 167 cm, and her brown eyes are kind before they are anything else. Her clothes are soft and carefully chosen: a silk blouse, a long skirt, a trench coat over the top.

Gentle describes her, though not completely. She is intuitive in a way that can feel uncanny, hearing the thing you left unsaid and answering that instead. In her late twenties, she speaks a quiet English and reads French novels in translation, the short ones she can finish on a Sunday, one chapter at a time. Pilates keeps her posture straight. A small balcony garden keeps her patient.

Her evening in this corner of London is simple and very good. An early stroll through the rose beds inside the Inner Circle of Regent's Park while the light turns to gold, then south down Marylebone High Street to Le Relais de Venise on Marylebone Lane, where there is no menu, only steak, a green salad and a queue she never minds. She talks less than most people and listens more, and the silences are easy ones.

Home is Marylebone and her favourite walk ends in Regent's Park, so she is seldom more than fifteen minutes from a W1 hotel. Quiet weeknights suit her best, ideally with a day's notice, and a note through booking reaches her the same evening.

After dark · Marylebone

Liana after dark

Half past six at the Chester Road gate, and she has already walked the long way round to get there. The rose beds are sliding into their autumn colours but still generous, and she knows exactly where the scent is strongest. You walk slowly. She asks about the book you are reading, and if you are not reading one, she recommends a slim novel you could finish before your train leaves.

Dinner at Le Relais de Venise is a lesson in simplicity: no decisions, a second helping of steak arriving just when you thought you had finished, and a glass of red she picks in seconds. The room is loud, so she sits close enough to hear you properly. Afterwards the High Street is hushed and its windows are dark. She walks you back to your hotel at an unhurried pace and says goodnight as though she means it.

Q&A · 3 questions

Liana, asked

The pale apricot ones near the fountain. They look tired by August and keep flowering anyway, right into October. I admire that in a plant and in a person.

Because choosing is tiring after a long day, and the steak is always right. It leaves more room for the conversation, which is the part I came for.

Herbs, two pots of lavender and a fig tree that has never produced a single fig. I keep hoping.
